Hayabusa-2 capsule returns to Earth!

December 06, 2020

Take a look back at the DFN’s involvement with the recent HAYABUSA-2 re-entry.

The DFN team took part in the observation campaign of JAXA’s Hayabusa-2 capsule re-entry over South Australia in December 2020. Along with colleagues from Kochi University of Technology (KUT) and their partners at Nihon University and Ibaraki University, they deployed 83 instruments to capture the effects of this planned fireball. As well as fixed DFN cameras, 3 additional sites were set up on the night, as well as some other spectral cameras. Seismic and infrasound sensors were also deployed along the path of the trajectory and data were recorded by 97% of stations. This was a huge success and the team looks forward to analysing the data with Japanese colleagues.
